Adapted from a cell-phone novel, SKY OF LOVE depicts the true story of an average girl’s three stormy years of high school filled with love, rape, pregnancy, miscarriage, parting and reunion.

Directed by Imai Natsumi, this film is a faithful interpretation of the cell-phone novel which will leave the audience with arrayed feelings of saccharine high school love, wrenching heartbreak and a tearful reunion.

This Japanese box office hit deals with the growing affections students Tahara Mika (Yui Aragaki) and Sakurai “Hiro” Hiroki (Haruma Miura) have for each other and the events that transpire during the course of their topsy-turvy relationship. Initially, Mika is apprehensive of Hiro but soon begins to warm up to the romantic side behind his punk exterior. Things are going well until a fateful night on Christmas Eve. A couple of climaxes soon ensue which resulted in a tears-inducing finale.

Some parts of the plot though were too dramatic and seemed to be overly contrived. For example, Hiro’s ex-girlfriend Saki (Asami Usuda) arranges for Mika to be kidnapped and raped as a humiliation tactic against Hiro. And the scene where the couple makes love in the school library was astonishing; thankfully Imai left the details to one’s imagination.

Okinawa-born model and actress Yui Aragaki played the role of Mika with such charisma and charm that it is difficult not to be captivated by her. J-Pop Singer and Actor Haruma Miura is also perfect as the rebel character Hiro. Besides capturing Mika’s heart in the movie, I am sure he will also gain popularity among female viewers with his deep tan and multiple changes in hairstyle from bleached blonde to dark brown to wearing a beanie.
Though some scenes were overly dramatic and unrealistic, I liked the emotional aspect of this show. Coupled with good-lookers and scenic shots, this romantic drama won me over with ease.
